Welcome to Exactajob! Follow these simple steps to create your first cost estimate:
1Create a Property
Start by adding your property with basic information:
- Property name (e.g., "Smith Residence")
- Full address
- Year built
- Optional: Total square footage
2Add Rooms
Add rooms to your property by entering:
- Room name (e.g., "Living Room", "Kitchen")
- Width and length in feet
- Ceiling height
- Number of windows
On devices with LiDAR (iPhone 12 Pro and later, iPad Pro 2020 and later):
- Tap "Add Room" and choose "Scan Room with AR"
- Point your device at the room and slowly pan around
- The app will automatically detect walls, windows, and doors
- Review and save the measurements
Tip: Edit your property anytime to add, edit, or delete rooms.
3Create a Job
From your property detail screen, tap "Create Job" and select your job type:
HVAC
Heating and cooling system installation
Flooring
Hardwood, carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate
Windows
Window replacement and installation
Roofing
Roof repair and replacement
Insulation
Attic, wall, and crawlspace insulation
Plumbing
Pipe work and fixture installation
4Enter Job Details
Provide specific information about your project:
- For Flooring: Select which rooms to floor, material type, and quality level
- For Windows: Add each window size, type, and specifications
- For HVAC: System type, number of units, and installation requirements
- For Roofing: Roof type, pitch, and square footage (measure on map)
- For Insulation: Area to insulate, R-value, and square footage
- For Plumbing: Work type, fixtures, and pipe details
5Get Your Estimate
The app will generate a detailed cost estimate including:
- Labor costs
- Material costs
- Equipment costs (if applicable)
- Total project cost
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add rooms to my property?
Navigate to your property detail screen, tap the menu (three dots), and select "Edit Property". From there, you can add rooms by tapping "Add Room" and entering the dimensions. You can also edit or delete existing rooms.
Can I create a job without a property?
No, you must create a property first. This ensures accurate estimates based on actual property dimensions. The simplified workflow helps organize all jobs under their respective properties.
How accurate are the cost estimates?
Our estimates use industry-standard calculations based on typical labor rates, material costs, and common project requirements. However, actual costs may vary based on your location, specific materials chosen, contractor rates, and market conditions. We recommend using estimates as a starting point and getting quotes from licensed contractors.
How do I select rooms for a flooring job?
When creating a flooring job, you'll see a list of all rooms in your property. Simply tap the checkbox next to each room you want to include in the flooring estimate. The app will automatically calculate the total area and provide accurate pricing based on your selections.
Can I edit a property after creating jobs for it?
Yes! You can edit your property details and room measurements at any time. However, estimates already generated will not automatically update. You may want to create a new estimate if you've made significant changes to room dimensions.
How do I delete a room?
When editing a property, you can delete a room in three ways: (1) Swipe left on the room and tap "Delete", (2) Long-press the room and select "Delete Room" from the context menu, or (3) Tap the red "Delete Room" button at the bottom of the room card.
What job types are supported?
Exactajob currently supports six job types: HVAC (heating/cooling systems), Flooring (hardwood, carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate), Windows (replacement and installation), Roofing (repair and replacement), Insulation (attic, walls, crawlspace), and Plumbing (pipes and fixtures).
How do I share an estimate with a contractor?
From the project detail screen, view your estimate and tap the share button to generate a PDF. You can then email it to contractors or share it via other apps. The PDF includes all project details, measurements, and cost breakdowns.
Can I have multiple properties?
Yes! You can create and manage as many properties as you need. This is useful if you own multiple homes, manage rental properties, or are planning improvements for different locations.
How do I use the roof measurement map?
When creating a roofing or attic insulation job, tap "Measure on Satellite Map". The app will show your property from above. Trace the outline of your roof by tapping to place points around the perimeter. The app automatically calculates the square footage based on your tracing and the selected roof pitch.
What if I don't know my property's square footage?
No problem! The square footage field is optional when creating a property. The app will automatically calculate total square footage by adding up all your room measurements. You can also manually enter a total square footage later if you have that information.
Why do I need to enter room dimensions manually?
You don't have to! On devices with LiDAR (iPhone 12 Pro and later, iPad Pro 2020 and later), you can use AR scanning to automatically measure rooms. Just point your device at the room and slowly pan around - the app detects walls, windows, and doors automatically. On devices without LiDAR, manual entry ensures accuracy and gives you complete control. You can measure rooms yourself or use existing floor plans. Both approaches provide reliable data for cost calculations.
How do I use the LiDAR room scanner?
When adding or editing rooms on a LiDAR-enabled device, tap "Add Room" and choose "Scan Room with AR". Hold your device at waist height and slowly pan around the room, making sure to capture all walls. The scanner will detect the room boundaries, windows, and doors automatically. When the scan is complete, review the measurements and tap "Save". You can always edit the measurements manually if needed.
